The story of Duracell's birth is based on the pioneering collaboration of creative scientist Samuel Ruben and successful marketer Philip Rogers Mallory in the early 1920s. Ruben, who came to P.R Mallory's company during the course of an experiment, soon saw the market openness and rolled up his sleeves to turn it into an opportunity. One man's creativity turns into another's marketing ability. This partnership, which lasted until the death of Mallory in 1975, is the starting point of today's Duracell technology.
Samuel Ruben's inventions are a revolution in battery technology. During the Second World War, the mercury battery, designed for high efficiency in difficult climatic conditions that zinc carbon batteries cannot resist, sells millions and achieves a high success rate. The establishment of The Mallory Battery Company coincided with the end of this period.
In the 1950s, Samuel Ruben began work to make the alkaline manganese battery last longer and more durable than any battery ever produced. At about the same time, Eastman Kodak releases built-in flash cameras that require more power than existing zinc carbon batteries provide. What is needed is a new size alkaline manganese battery. On top of that, Mallory produces AAA, also known as thin batteries.
Mallory and Ruben created the DURACELL brand in 1964 when the need for alkaline batteries increased with the development of photography. In a short time, the consumer market of DURACELL batteries expands and the production capacity is reorganized to meet the increasing sales in the 1970s.
Today, Duracell is the leader in high-performance alkaline battery market in the world . Ruben and Mallory's innovative approach in those years was the ancestor of today's new generation of DURACELL batteries.
